Roatan, Honduras: What Makes it So Special For Diving
Off the coast of Honduras lie the Bay Islands, made up of 8 islands and 53 cays. Of the 3 main islands, Roatan is the largest and the most popular vacation destination. Still only 9 miles wide at its widest point, it balances the tranquility of the Caribbean with accessibility to basic amenities. It is an important hub for cruise ships, ecotourism, fishing, but most importantly, scuba diving. Diving in Roatan draws international tourism and supports the island economy.
The Mesoamerican Reef, the second largest barrier reef in the world, surrounds Roatan and the Bay Islands. Home to hundreds of exotic fish species, sharks, and turtles, the reef stretches nearly 900 kilometers through the Caribbean. Roatan sits on the southern end of the reef, but the island's close proximity to it makes it a unique diving destination.
