The Mesoamerican Reef
Nine hundred kilometers of living reef wrap the Bay Islands. And Roatan sits right on it.
Off the coast of Honduras lie the Bay Islands: 8 islands and 53 cays. Roatan, the largest, balances Caribbean tranquility with a diver’s wildest wishlist: shipwrecks, sponge walls, caves and tunnels, underwater cliffs and canyons, all wrapped in the second-largest barrier reef on Earth, home to hundreds of exotic species, sharks and turtles.
Roatan sits on the southern end of that reef and is barely nine miles across at its widest, so the water is never far. We are directly opposite the Roatan Marine Park and support its work protecting the reef. After dark those same sites turn bioluminescent.
